Addressing SD-WAN latency issues with universal CPE platform

Lanner Electronics and 128 Technoly team up to ease SD-WAN deployments

Lanner Electronics has partnered with 128 Technology to help deploy next generation software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) and virtual network function (VNF) appliances using white box universal customer premises equipment (uCPE). According to Lanner, the two companies will work together to combine MPLS and VPN tunnels, 4G LTE, WiFi failover and legacy ATM T1 services into a single uCPE platform

The SD-WAN market is expected to continue to grow as more service providers seek to connect branch offices. The network architecture decouples network control and forwarding functions, allowing companies to create, manage and optimize WAN connections. A recent forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC) projects global SD-WAN infrastructure and services revenues will see a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 69.6% and hit $8.05 billion in 2021.

Embracing SD-WAN is easier said than done. Service providers face a number of hurdles in launching the technology, from network capacity issues on one end to security threats on the other. Lanner and 128 Technology said they intend to address issues common among several SD-WAN deployments, particularly within the realm of latency problems. The platform is based upon Secure Vector Routing (SVR), which includes an application-aware universal CPE platform with native load balancing and security for all VNF deployments.

“Getting it right from the beginning is key to roll out cloud based services. The combination of the Lanner vCPE platform solution with multiple access technologies and networking infrastructure simplifies the network and the utilization of compute resources” said Sven Freudenfeld, director of business development for the Telecom Application Business Unit at Lanner.

The partners said the technology can help combat latency issues typical of SD-WAN deployments. Lanner’s white-box uCPE appliances are tailored for VNFs edge deployments, according to the company, providing low latency, high availability, crypto acceleration, WiFi and LTE connectivity and failover, and high core counts for network virtualization.

“Partnering with the Lanner team allows us to deliver a SVR solution that makes economic sense, is easy to deploy, and simple to manage across multiple environments. With Lanner’s broad portfolio of hardware appliance solutions, we can address customer requirements across multiple vertical markets as they transition to a virtual world,” said Andy Ory, CEO of 128 Technology.

128 Technology isn’t the only partner Lanner has forged in an effort to improve SD-WAN performance. Last year, for instance, the white-box vendor collaborated with Versa Networks to test an integrated SD-security solution that combines Lanner’s virtual CPE equipment FW-7573 with SD-Security software.
