Analyst Angle: CBRS, a stepping stone for dynamic spectrum sharing

A conversation about CBRS with Neville Meijers, VP Business Development, and Patrik Lundqvist, Director Technical Marketing, Qualcomm Technologies

The below is only a summary. Download a transcript of the complete interview and access the complete report “3.5 GHz: Assessing technology, deployment options and business models” when it publishes on May 9.

CBRS has attracted much attention for its innovative take on spectrum sharing. But there are multiple technologies that provide spectrum sharing – and multiple benefits for incumbent and new ecosystem players.

Qualcomm has been promoting spectrum sharing for a long time. Neville Meijers, the VP of Business Development, and Patrik Lundqvist, Director of Technical Marketing, at Qualcomm Technologies, discuss with us Qualcomm’s perspective on CBRS in the 3.5 GHz band in the US and on other spectrum-sharing technologies.

Neville told us: “I think you’ll see the spectrum used for traditional mobile access. But you’ll see the spectrum leveraged for fixed wireless access, as well. And there are a number of whole new areas around private networks, whether for enterprise, educational institutions, or industrial IoT… A number of companies that haven’t traditionally been players in the cellular environment are now very interested in becoming players.”

Patrick added: “A private network has the advantage that the entity or company that owns it can control both the device side and the small-cell side. There may be an earlier start for CBRS private network deployments than for neutral host networks; you need a high penetration of devices for neutral hosting to be really effective, so this may start later.”

We will discuss our upcoming report ” Learning to share. CBRS in the 3.5 GHz band changes how we use spectrum” in a webinar on May 9, 2017, at 8:00 am PT, 11:00 am ET, 4:00 pm BST (UTC+1), 5:00 pm CEST. The webinar will also be available offline for those who cannot dial in.

This topic was further discussed on a webinar with Derek Peterson, CTO of Boingo.
