3 Hong Kong, Huawei demonstrate ‘4.5G’ network

China Mobile

Demo achieved download speeds of 1 Gbps

HONG KONG – Mobile operator 3 Hong Kong, the mobile communications division of Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings, and Chinese ICT company Huawei said they had successfully demonstrated a FDD+TDD and “4.5G” (TDD+) network at the Global Mobile Broadband Forum 2015.

The “4.5G” (TDD+) solution features four-component carrier carrier aggregation, large-scale 4X4 multiple-input/multiple-output multi-antenna technology and 256 quadrature amplitude modulation designed to significantly boost network capacity and peak download rates. During the demonstration, 3 Hong Kong paired FDD spectrum in the 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands with TDD 2300 MHz spectrum via CA technology, and achieved download speeds of 1 gigabit per second by utilizing 60 megahertz of spectrum to maximize bandwidth efficiency.

“3 Hong Kong and Huawei will continue to innovate and bring new mobile technologies to Hong Kong,” Peter Wong, CEO and managing director at Hutchinson Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings, said. “We plan to refarm our 900 [megahertz] and 2100 [megahertz] spectrums for LTE network deployment in order to develop a 5CC LTE-A network, further boosting the peak download rate to around 1.3 Gbps.”

Huawei’s One LTE solution enabled 3 Hong Kong to better utilize its spectrum and maximize bandwidth efficiency while providing an enhanced user experience. The solution also allows the telco to integrate FDD and TDD networks through a multimode and multiband single RAN platform designed to improve network capacity and coverage and potentially lowering operating costs.

Also showcased by 3 Hong Kong was a commercial smartphone compatible with FDD+TDD 3CC CA technology at a “4.5G” demonstration that took place in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong.

In July 2015, 3 Hong Kong, Huawei and Qualcomm Technologies introduced Hong Kong’s first end-to-end FDD+TDD LTE-A commercial network.

Chinese service provider 3 Hong Kong owns blocks of spectrum across the 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz and 2600MHz bands.
