Huawei Developers Conference marks challenge to traditional ICT software vendor community

Huawei

First Huawei Developers Conference (#HDC2015) coupled with Huawei’s recent announcement to train 10,000 cloud engineers signals a potential intent to challenge traditional ICT vendors providing enterprise cloud computing, industrial IoT, and telecom NFV and SDN solutions

Huawei is set to host its first Huawei Developers Conference in Shenzhen, China. The two-day conference, which is scheduled to open Oct. 19, is expected to attract more than 2,000 developers and outline Huawei’s strategy for its Enterprise Cloud, “Internet of Things” and Telco Capability Cloud initiatives.

Trillions in shareholder value tied to embracing software development community

Bottom line: billions – if not trillions – of dollars in future shareholder value is tied to carriers, over-the-top service providers, and information and communication technology vendors embracing the software developer community.

  1. Competition for scarce developer community resources is increasing.
  2. Developer community is critical to longer-term value creation for carriers, ICT vendors and OTT service providers (Facebook, Google, Twitter) and their investors.
  3. Over the next five to seven years, billions of dollars in ICT-related (enterprise and telco) software and service revenue is at stake. Traditional software vendors (i.e., Amdocs, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Oracle) are now competing directly with traditional hardware vendors (i.e., Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, Alcatel Lucent, Cisco, Juniper) to help communications service providers – wireless, wireline, cable – compete with OTT service providers.
  4. Huawei, a telecommunications equipment maker with more than 170,000 employees and $28 billion in revenue for the first half of 2015 (a 30% increase over the same period a year ago), is aggressively expanding software investment in cloud computing, network functions virtualization, software-defined networking, IoT and telco customer experience capabilities.

Overview of Huawei Developers Conference

In addition to 100-plus technical “open architecture” sessions on Huawei’s cloud, network pipe and device domains, the conference is set to include:

Github co-founder Scott Chacon among keynote speakers discussing open cloud platforms

During his keynote speech at the 5th Huawei Cloud Congress held in September, Huawei’s rotating CEO Eric Xu described the company’s strategy of focusing on “IT infrastructure, software platforms and enterprise cloud services when creating a cloud ecosystem.”

At this year’s developers congress, Huawei plans to showcase how its open cloud computing platform will effectively serve developers and help bring the industry a step closer to an open and dynamic cloud ecosystem.
