Telefónica overhauls OSS with VPIsystems software

O-RAN

Goal is to use network analytics to improve planning, efficiency and quality assurance

Major global communications service provider Telefónica is overhauling its operations support system using software solutions provided by VPIsystems.

Telefónica, which has some 340 million customers around the world, tapped VPIsystems to provide predictive network analytics for capacity planning, network optimization and subscriber quality assurance software. Telefónica is billing the OSS transformation as a transport optimization program with plans to roll out VPIsystems solutions in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Germany and Peru.

Network analytics is a major trend area for telecom software providers. Many products are geared toward effective small cell deployments, which, on the carrier adoption side, has lagged behind projections.

“As data consumption in our networks continues to grow rapidly, our customers expect an experience that is similar to that of a voice call,” Juan Manuel Caro Bernat, director of operations and OSS for Telefónica, said in a statement. “Streamlined capacity planning is critical in realizing our strategy. The key to doing this successfully is to have a business partner who has experience in doing this at a large scale. VPIsystems’ agility and their ability to truly understand our requirements and challenges were key factors in our decision.”

VPIsystems will provide the technology to enable Telefónica to monitor network analytics in correlation to OSS, billing and customer-care systems. Proactive actions driven by analytics allow network operators to foresee problems and fix them before they occur, which also has the impact of deflecting potential customer service calls.

“We are pleased that Telefónica has selected us for their Transport Network Optimization Program,” Tito Sharma, president and CEO of VPIsystems, said. “The tremendous growth in the adoption of smart phones over the last few years has greatly increased data traffic on operators’ networks. This is creating a need for network optimization software to accommodate these demands as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.”
