Coders: Episode 13 – Building Pheebo, an iOS video aggregation app

In this episode of Coders I dig into the tools and techniques used to bring video app Pheebo to life. Pheebo is a video aggregation app for iOS that provides a slick user interface to quickly find and watch video content across the disparate services available to consumers. I spoke with founder and CEO Arthur Matiossian about how he and one developer brought Pheebo to market. Learn about Facebook’s Parse, plus the vagaries of API’s from Vimeo and YouTube, plus how a small shop develops an app and tracks support queries.

One interesting aspect of Pheebo’s development was in navigating the differences in API’s for video services. While each one begins as a simple video feed, integrating metadata proved to be a bit more difficult. Plus, the Pheebo team worked hard on the interface, and the minimum viable product took a while to develop due to the stringent design requirements needed to build a usable, friendly video aggregation app.

We also discuss what might be on tap for Apple’s keynote next week, and lament the rumor that a new Apple TV, along with proper app support, might not be in the cards. We do anticipate a lot of talk around the Apple Watch, plus iOS 9 and the new version of OS X.

Next week I’ll be reporting from Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) so stay tuned!
