Arno is the first NFV software platform release from OPNFV

The Open Platform Network Function Virtualization Project released its first software platform, dubbed Arno, which OPNFV said is a “develop-focused” release designed to foster the development of NFV, virtual network functions and use case-based testing.

The platform is said to offer an initial build of the NFV Infrastructure and Virtual Infrastructure Manager components of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s NFV architecture, which is seen as the de facto NFV model for telecom deployments.

OPNFV noted that key aspects of Arno include its ability for “continuous integration, automated deployment and testing of components from upstream projects such as Ceph, KVM, OpenDaylight, OpenStack and Open VSwitch” to allow developers to automatically install and explore the platform; the ability for end users and developers to deploy their own or third-party VNFs to test functionality and performance in various traffic scenarios and use cases; availability of a community test lab infrastructure that allows users to test the platform in different environments and on different hardware; and its support of automatic continuous integration of specific components to support “upstream projects” as they are developed independently to “ensure seamless integration and interworking within the platform.”

“The increasing interest and demand for quicker adoption and implementation of NFV is the driving force behind the collaborative efforts of the OPNFV community,” said Chris Price, technical steering committee chair at OPNFV, in a statement. “Arno is a major step in achieving these goals, implementing a congruent NFV platform for accelerated development and application deployment across the industry.”

“We are very happy to see the adoption of components of ETSI NFV architecture in Arno,” added Steven Wright, chairman of the ETSI NFV ISG. “This is a major milestone for OPNFV and the NFV ecosystem in building the integrated open source NFV platform.”

OPNFV, which was formed last September out of the Linux Foundation, counts 57 member companies and said it has worked with more than 100 developers on the open source NFV platform.

Heather Kirksey, recently installed director of OPNFV, added that future releases are expected to look at enhancing the platform with “new features that address specific real-world scenarios and carrier-grade requirements.”
