Ericsson wants 15% share of Indian TV market by 2017

Partners with Tata Sky to launch new video and OTT content delivery solution

Continuing its push into the television and media vertical, Swedish networking firm Ericsson joined forces with Tata Sky to provide Indian customers with a higher-quality television experience.

Ericsson will supply Tata Sky with its AVP 4000 System Encoder, a video-compression platform that will allow Tata Sky to offer more channels and other content, over-the-top delivery services and enhanced picture quality. Ericsson projects that total mobile video traffic will increase by a factor of 17 by 2020, as compared to the volume tallied between 2009 and 2014.

DNA Analysis reports that Ericsson wants to control a 15% share of the Indian TV market by 2017.

Ericsson technology will be used by Tata Sky to reach 13.5 million connections; Sun TV has partnered with Ericsson to reach an additional 95 million subscribers, according to DNA.

Harit Nagpal, CEO of Tata Sky said, “It is of utmost importance to consistently deliver a high-quality viewing experience to our subscribers. The Ericsson AVP 4000 System Encoder allows us to enhance picture quality, offer increased volumes of channels and content, and launch new services, such as OTT, on the same platform.”

Earlier this year, Ericsson supported Tata Sky’s launch of the first commercial 4K video service in the Asian subcontinent.

Ericsson’s Head of Region India Chris Houghton said that among other advantages, the video platform will help address spectral challenges in the Indian market.

“Ericsson is committed to helping its customers overcome the challenges of satellite spectrum scarcity and meet increasing quality expectations of Indian consumers,” Houghton said. “The AVP 4000 System Encoder is designed to overcome today’s bandwidth and delivery constraints by providing the necessary flexibility, velocity and agility to deploy new services within an extremely competitive landscape.”

Ericsson has been aggressively pushing its media solutions, which includes the cloud DVR, Media Delivery Network and LTE-Broadcast solutions.
