Microsoft 8.1 update having issues, user finds fix

Microsoft 8.1 is experiencing updating errors. When users try to install the update, many are getting an error message for patch KB 3022345, an update to “enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.”

KB 3022345 is one of 34 patches for the Microsoft 8.1 update. The update triggers an installation failure 800F0922.

InfoWorld Tech Watch reporter, Woody Leonhard, tested the installation. He said it is quite unpredictable. “It was fine on a couple of my Windows 8.1 PCs, but falls over on others. There’s no indication as to why or how or what to do to make it work.”

Many are understandably frustrated about the issue. “Don’t you just simply love it when this kind of thing happens,” a poster on Nuluvius said.  “No explanation, very few resources found online and a sparse unhelpful entry in both [the] event log and windows update log.”

A Microsoft representative addressed the issues, saying, “For devices running Windows 8.1, we instituted a new approach to servicing to help ensure our customers’ privacy and security are protected, while providing the most optimal performance through the most up-to-date software. As we’ve been monitoring the release, we’ve been actively discussing this new approach to servicing with enterprise customers and listening to their feedback regarding managing the deployment timeline. As a result, we’ve decided to extend the timeframe for enterprise customers to deploy these new product updates from 30 to 120 days, aligned with the August 12 update cycle.”
