América Móvil has selected NEC and NetCracker Technology as providers for a consolidated, end-to-end OSS solution for its Latin American operations, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.
The goal of the project, which will replace legacy inventory systems, is to standardize the operating support system platforms within América Móvil’s Latin American operations to accelerate time-to-market by automating network and service fulfillment; streamline the ordering process and deliver an improved customer experience.
Opera talks Latin American trends: In a video interview with RCR Wireless News, Jay Hinman, VP of operator solutions at Opera, talked about the company’s latest projects in the Latin American region, including the deal with TIM Brasil, which has been a key client since 2010. Opera also works with Nextel in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. The company is starting to provide solutions for América Móvil.
Talking about upcoming trends, Hinman said that networks will have a hard time keeping up with user demand as people move to more video- and audio-streaming services. Other challenges for the region include managing data plans, the sponsored data trend and the ability to provide small data packages.
Small cells in Mexico: América Móvil’s mobile unit in Mexico, Telcel, has turned on scalable small cell systems for in-building coverage. Gerardo Aguirre, director of network engineering with Telcel said that the carrier’s largest customers in Mexico demand and expect a superior mobile network experience at all times. Telcel teamed up with SpiderCloud for its go-to in-building network solution for Mexico’s business, education and government customers.

Panama: There were a total of 7.1 million mobile lines at the end of 2014 in Panama, representing a penetration rate of 95%. According to the government regulator, the telecommunications market recorded revenues of $3.76 billion between 2008 and 2014.
Brazil: Sky Brazil, which is owned by satellite TV operator DirecTV, estimates that it will add between 300,000 and 400,000 customers to its base this year.
Peru: In March, about 65,000 number-portability requests were made by mobile-line customers in Peru. According to regulator OSIPTEL, Claro and Entel were the carriers that won over the most customers.
LatAm: The airline company Avianca tapped Telefónica to provide customer relationship, Internet and security services across the 26 countries in which Avianca operates.
