Digital Telco Transformation announcement ahead of Mobile World Congress

To help telecom operators keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital world, Ericsson has announced new Digital Telco Transformation services, which combine systems integration with business consultation.

The idea is to enable telcos to monetize digital information, media, financial and health services by providing consistent experience across customer-facing channels.

Telecom Italia Digital Solutions, part of carrier Telecom Italia, has elected to use Ericsson’s Digital Telco Transformation services. CEO Claudio Contini noted that a digital transformation creates new money-making streams.

“Customer experience and user numbers are the new sources of revenue,” Contini said in a statement. “More than ever, today, the customer is king. Only by understanding and embracing the need to fundamentally change the way we do business can we remain relevant to our customers. … The first steps are essential. Planning requires a review of the company’s strategic goals, assessment of the current environment and a roadmap based on impacted areas such as people, process and tools – which, combined correctly, will help steer the transformation journey in the right direction.”

Ericsson said it will showcase the service during Mobile World Congress, set for March 2-5 in Barcelona, Spain.

Paolo Colella, Ericsson’s VP and head of consulting and systems integration, emphasized that the Digital Telco Transformation service does not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

“Many operators are aware of the pressing need to transform themselves into digital telcos,” he said, “but few are aware of the steps required to get there.

“Only a holistic approach that reinvests the telco operating model can ensure operators avoid major business model disruptions, and realize their digital telco vision,” he said.

Ericsson’s Digital Telco Transformation services include managing operator IT and network data assets; leveraging OSS/BSS portfolios; and pushing network and IT convergence through cloud computing, network function virtualization and software-defined networking.
