Software is becoming an increasingly important part of telecommunication networks and deployments as both wired and wireless carriers look to add functionality to operations while increasing simplicity and reducing costs. RCR Wireless News is keeping an eye on recent developments through its weekly “Software” wrap up.

The TM Forum this week held its Digital Disruption Live event in San Jose, Calif., which included a strong focus on big data and analytics, virtualization and the “Internet of Things.” As part of the proceedings, TM Forum also updated a number of its initiatives.

The organization announced a suite of 20 new best practices and proposed standards for management of NFV and digital services as well as its latest Frameworx 14.5 suite. The work was conducted through collaboration with a number of TM Forum members as part of its Zero-touch Orchestration, Operations and Management, or ZOOM, project.

TM Forum also released a digital services “toolkit” that it said was designed to “enable effective end-to-end connectivity” for IoT and digital services. The toolkit was put together through work with enterprise partners Apigee, BaseN, Cisco, Detecon, Ericsson, IBM, Microsoft, Orange, Verizon Telematics and ISPM.

In other software news:

–The Open Platform for NFV Project announced the addition of Array Networks, Midokura, Ooredoo and Sonus Networks to the group. The organization, which claims to be a community-led industry supported open source reference platform for NFV, said it now has 44 members. The project was launched in September as an offshoot of the Linux Foundation.

—Oracle released the Acme Packet 4600 session border control platform, designed to provide network traffic control for services such as voice over LTE, rich communication services and high-definition video calling.

–ConteXtream launched its ContexNet 4.0 service, which is an OpenDaylight-based software-defined networking fabric for NFV. The company said the carrier-grade solution is designed to help carriers “avoid commoditization of their products and develop new revenue streams by creating a more flexible and programmable network through a SDN/NFV model.”

–NetCracker Technology announced a multi-year renewal with cable provider Blue Ridge Communications for its licensed NetCracker Revenue Management solution. That platform is designed to support ordering, billing, provisioning and operations for Blue Ridge’s pay-television, on-demand, high-speed data and voice services. Financial terms of the extension were not released.
