IEEE GlobeCom: 5G prototyping with updated LabView

5G test and measurement

AUSTIN, TEXAS – National Instruments co-founder James Truchard today highlighted his company’s recently updated LabView Communications System Design Suite, which integrates software-defined radio hardware with comprehensive software for 5G prototyping.

Truchard, speaking from the IEEE GlobeCom show in Austin, Texas, said the redesigned LabView can support engineers working in “5G” research and development.

“LabView was originally developed for test and measurement,” Truchard told RCR Wireless News.

“We saw how the spreadsheet had been very effective in solving financial analyst problems and we wanted to do the same thing for folks working in test and measurement,” he said.

LabView was described at its core to be a system-design language that allows engineers “to work in software-defined radio.”

The new product “extends the ability for us to solve software-defined radio problems by combining our structured data flow with synchronous data flow,” Truchard explained.

He said that as 5G develops — it will include software-defined networks, multiple data planes and ultra-low latency — LabView will continue to be useful.

“We’ve evolved this technology over the last 30 years to be a very, very competitive (product). We can use all that infrastructure that we’ve developed over the last 30 years … and apply it to this space to come up with a highly unique product that really allows for very quick prototyping of very complex systems.”
