A conversation with Art King, Director of Enterprise Services and Technologies, SpiderCloud Wireless
SpiderCloud takes NFV to the edge – in carrier-driven small-cell deployments in the enterprise, where there are many advantages to run some applications locally in a virtualized environment.
In its NFV-ready platform for the enterprise-RAN solutions, SpiderCloud Services Module, which is a controller for enterprise small cells and provides a link to the mobile core, becomes an NFV point-of-presence for what SpiderCloud calls “edge-cloud” enterprise applications, which can be locally linked to the Applications may include security, analytics, content filtering and content delivery.
SpiderCloud solution “is sold and delivered to mobile operators, and they deliver it on the premises. For the first time, they have a processor out at the edge of the architecture that is part of another network element, so they don’t have to deploy something new or different to have an edge cloud service out at the enterprise premises. They have it delivered, internally, as part of another network element. It changes the dynamic around the number of elements to manage and maintain, and the overall opex costs for the operator to have that processor out there,” says Art King.
Mobile operators have been keen in getting closer to their enterprise customers for a long time. In our conversation with Art King we talk about the role that small cells and virtualization play in strengthening the role of mobile operators in the enterprise and other vertical markets.
