MWC 2014: Getting schooled by SK Telecom with ‘Smart Appcessories’

BARCELONA, Spain – South Korean telecommunications provider (NYSE: SKM)  SK Telecom, showcased their “Smart Appcessories” line at this year’s Mobile World Congress 2014 event.

Going green

Within the line, SK Telecom displayed “Smart Green Button” used for emergency calling. For instance, if a person needs emergency help, they would push the green button for three seconds and it will transmit to an emergency contact and the police. The service will then vibrate, notifying the sender that the call has been placed and received. Hyun Joo of SK Telecom showcased this feature stating that it “will give everyone relief in knowing your safety is in better hands.”

Are you projecting?

SK Telecom also showcased its handheld pico-beam projector. At 1.77-inches wide and weighing 4.4 ounces, the cube-shaped device allows the user to project various contents onto a surface.

SK Telecom said that last year it exported around 8,000 units to seven different countries and is expecting to sell 30,000 units in in overseas markets this year. CNET reports that the projector has a battery life of 120 minutes, VGA-native resolution and 35-lumens of brightness via its DLP DMD projection system. The Smart Beam also supports MHL connectivity interface and can be used with any smartphone supports the standard.

SK Telecom said the device retails for about $300, and is currently only available in South Korea.
