Bloomberg is reporting that insider Satya Nadella will be the new CEO. 46-year-old Nadella currently heads Microsoft’s cloud services unit, where he has grown revenue more than 20% in two years. This summer he also took over Microsoft’s enterprise business when the company reorganized to focus more on devices. Microsoft is increasing its focus on hardware at a time when many companies are moving in the opposite direction. It paid $7.2 billion for Nokia’s device business, leading to speculation that Nokia’s Stephen Elop (a former Microsoft executive) would be the next Microsoft CEO. Now it appears that Steve Ballmer’s successor will be a Redmond insider, and the next question is who the company’s new chairman will be. Founder Bill Gates has said he wants to devote the rest of his life to philanthropy, but remain an active Microsoft board member. |
