Colombia telecom update: 49M mobile subscribers, 6.2M Internet broadband connections

Colombia’s ministry of technology and communications (Mintic) has released the latest numbers for the country’s telecommunication industry. Internet broadband connections in Colombia have reached 6.2 million, while there are now 49.06 million mobile subscribers, meaning that there are 105 lines per 100 inhabitants.

In the fourth quarter of last year, there were 7,256,091 Internet connections in Colombia, of which 6,271,038 were broadband, a growth of 6% compared to the 3Q12.  Of the 6.2 million broadband connections, 62.5% were fixed, 36.9% were 3G networks and 0.6% were LTE. According to Mintec, the 6.2 million broadband subscribers represents a 13.5% penetration. By the last quarter of 2011, the penetration rate was 10.5%.

As for the country’s mobile scenario, prepaid contracts remain dominant accounting for 80.62% of total mobile lines while postpaid represented 19.38%.

Claro (Comunicación Celular S.A. Comcel) still leads the mobile market with a 61.9% market share, followed by Telefónica’s Movistar (Telefónica Móviles Colombia S.A.) with 23.85%, Tigo (Colombia Móvil) with 13.48%, Uff Móvil with 0.67% and UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones with 0.10%.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, mobile lines in Colombia numbered 46.2 million with a penetration of 100.3%.

The government announced that there were 3,209,059 mobile Internet subscribers by the end of the 4Q12, 15.1% more than the 4Q11. Of the total, 72.2% were 3G connections, 26.7% were 2G, and 1.1% were LTE.

Telefónica Móviles Colombia leads the market with a 49.69% share, followed by Claro with 22.99%, Tigo with 20.96%; UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones has 5.03%; ETB (Empresa de Telecomunicaciones de Bogotá) owns 1.29%, and Avantel has 0.03%.
