Colombia’s Emcali to launch IPTV services

Colombia’s state-owned Emcali, which provides water, telecommunications and electricity services in Cali, plans to launch an IPTV service in the next couple of months. The company has been testing the technology and the structure packages for the launch.

According to the local newspaper El Pais, the offer will initially include 90 standard definition channels and six high-definition channels.

Emcali’s telecommunications manager, Edwin Lopez Bouzas, told El Pais that the company is designing its IPTV commercial offering and closing negotiations with firms that provide the programming. The launch is part of a company strategy to strengthen the telecommunications business and compete in the market with a greater variety of serivces.

The company did not unveil numbers, but Bouzas Lopez said the company has made significant investments in existing telecommunications network.

The service is expected to be available first to Emcali’s existing customers, as the operator will offer IPTV as part of service bundles.
