Telefónica’s Movistar Chile anounced the transfer of 558 telecommunications towers to telecom infrastructure giant American Tower’s Chilean subsidiary ATC. The purchase price reaches approximately $96 million (49.153 billion of Chilean pesos.)
The transfer of the antenna support towers’ telecommunications transmission includes the facilities to keep them installed and operating. The transaction enables American Tower to offer co-location services to telecom operators, in line with the infrastructure sharing agreements signed by Movistar with other operators.
According to Movistar, the deal will allow the carrier to focus on the technical and operational management of its network. Telefónica Móviles Chile will continue to use the towers under a leasing contract.

This is American Tower’s third acquisition in Latin America since June. Last December, AMT announced its plans to purchase 2,500 towers from Telefónica’s Mexican subsidiary for about US $500 million, excluding value-added tax. In June, AMT bought more than 2,100 towers from telecommunications group Millicom International Cellular SA (MIC) subsidiary Colombia Móvil for $182 million in cash.
Currently, American Tower owns and operates about 40,000 communications sites in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ghana, India, Mexico, Peru and South Africa.
