Texas Instruments gets first Netflix HD certification on Android

Texas Instruments (TXN) released a new technology that allows users to stream content from their devices to larger screens via the Netflix HD app for Android. TI is the first to achieve the Netflix Silicon Reference Implementation (SRI) certification for the software by using technology from the company’s OMAP 4 platform, which performs basic requirements necessary to stream video to enabled devices and allows the ability to watch videos in full 1080p HD.
Users running the Netflix app on their smartphones can also connect their devices to HDMI-supported television sets as the platform includes HDCP encryption.
TI’s dual ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor powers the technology and the company claims that by using both cores it gives users both high performance and low battery consumption.
“Netflix already has a rich heritage of streaming to PCs, Macs, game consoles, Internet-connected TVs, iPhone and iPad, and many set-top-boxes, so we sought a semiconductor partner that could bring our service to the broader mobile environment smoothly and securely,” said Bill Holmes, VP of business development at Texas Instruments. “TI’s OMAP architecture and M-Shield security will set the stage for a high-performance, low-power, secure platform that will help Netflix members instantly watch unlimited TV shows and movies on Android devices.”
TI said that the M-Shield security provides a hardware protected trusted execution environment (TEE), which gives users protection against possible attacks while streaming and reduces the amount of power it takes the device to run the app.  Other security integration includes Wi-Fi based WEP, WPA and WPA2 protocols.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread supports the software and TI plans to release it for more Android platforms in the near future. TI also said that devices with the OMAP 4 processor are planned to have the app pre-installed at the time of launch.
