The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
Cellular
–Indonesia: Telkomsel chose Nokia Siemens Networks to boost the carrier’s HSDPA throughput my moving toward a flat architecture with its Direct Tunnel software upgrade. Direct Tunnel simplifies the network and the data flow between the end-user and the Internet, said Nokia Siemens. With Direct Tunnel, users’ 3G/HSDPA data traffic bypasses the packet core control node en route to the IP backbone, reducing the number of transmission links required.
–Spain: Telefonica Spain has launched a 3G network expansion using eco-friendly equipment from Nokia Siemens Networks. The upgrade aimed to increase the carrier’s service reach by more than 25% in dense urban areas. The deployment included Nokia Siemens’ Flexi Base Station.
WiMAX
–Botswana: Orange Botswana chose Alvarion Ltd. for a turnkey WiMAX deployment using the company’s 4Motion end-to-end solution. The 2.5 GHz network covers Gaborone and Francistown.
–Tanzania: Aperto Networks said it won a contract with pan-African carrier SimbaNET to provide its PacketMAX technology for a WiMAX network deployment in Tanzania. SimbaNEt is deploying PacketMAX 5000 base stations and PacketMAX 100 subscriber units in Dar-es-salaam.
Miscellaneous
–United Kingdom: Ericsson said it has been chosen by Mobile Broadband Network Ltd., a joint venture of 3 UK and T-Mobile UK, to provide managed services to complete the consolidation of the companies’ 3G infrastructure. The agreement called for 220 T-Mobile staff members to transfer to Ericsson. Ericsson will be responsible for the network design and deployment requirements of the consolidation program.
