WSJ reports more Sprint Nextel layoffs in the works

Sprint Nextel Corp. is reportedly planning to lay off several thousand employees, according to an article citing anonymous sources in The Wall Street Journal.
Sprint Nextel declined to comment on the story. “We don’t comment on rumor or speculation,” a spokesman told RCR Wireless News.
The No. 3 carrier’s new CEO Dan Hesse is also said to be considering a plan that would move the company’s headquarters back to Overland Park, Kansas, which is where the carrier operated exclusively from before it acquired Nextel Communications Inc. in 2005. The combined company has since made its official home in Reston, Va., where Nextel maintained its offices. There’s no word on whether the 4,500 employees at the headquarters would be among those cut from the payroll.
Sprint Nextel let 5,000 employees go a year ago after it reported significant losses on postpaid iDEN customers. If more jobs are cut, it would be the second time the carrier has made such a move in little more than 12 months.
The latest rumored job cuts don’t appear on scale with last year’s cut, but The WSJ citied sources that said it’s likely to be in the range of a few thousand. The company currently has about 60,000 employees.
