BETHESDA, Md.-Jumping into the tween mobile market, new mobile virtual network operator Kajeet rounded up $27 million in venture capital funding, according to the Washington Business Journal.
A Kajeet official was not immediately available for comment.
The Bethesda, Md.-based MVNO’s leadership has experience in Internet start-ups, securing venture capital and working in the wireless business. Ben Weintraub, senior vice president of operations and one of three co-founders of Kajeet, was a co-founder and chief operating officer of SimplyWireless.com.
Kajeet co-founder Daniel Neal headed up VCampus Corp., which provided e-learning services for businesses, government and educational institutions, and has served as director of national partnering for Global One Communications L.L.C., a joint venture of Sprint Nextel Corp., Deutsche Telekom AG and France Telecom. Matt Baker, the MVNO’s third co-founder and senior vice president of strategy and business development, developed plans and product strategies for STSN Inc., which provides wired and wireless data services for the hospitality industry. Baker was previously vice president of technology ventures for Marriott International Inc.
The name of the prepaid service, Kajeet, is an anagram of the first initials of the founders’ children. Kajeet has not released details of a launch date or carrier partner.
