ALLENTOWN, Pa.-Chip vendor Agere Systems today released its new TrueAdvantage line of products, which the company said would save carriers millions of dollars by combining second- and third-generation network technology in one box. The company-which sells its semiconductor offerings to the likes of L.M. Ericsson, Nokia Corp., Nortel Networks Ltd. and others-said its single-chip offering will cut down on carriers’ backhaul and buildout expenses by reducing the number of boxes needed to run a network.

“These devices make up the world’s first offering to converge 2G and 3G,” said Mark Cieri, Agere’s director of new business development in telecommunications.

Concurrently, NEC Corp. announced it will use Agere’s TrueAdvantage offering, including its Advanced Payload Plus network processor chips, in its line of infrastructure equipment.

Along with the chips, Agere is also offering supporting software packages, reference designs and hardware development systems.
