Wayport claims position as top U.S. hot-spot provider

AUSTIN, Texas-Wireless and wired broadband service provider Wayport Inc. said it has become the nation’s largest Wi-Fi hot-spot provider with more than 6,300 locations available in the United States. The provider said it is adding up to 150 new hot-spot locations per week. Wayport noted that it has registered more than 8 million customer connections on its network, and it posted a company record 600,000 connections last October.

The company’s Wi-Fi hot spots include more than 2,300 McDonald’s restaurant locations, more than 700 hotels and 12 major airports. In addition, Wayport is also a managed service provider at thousands of hot-spot locations under roaming agreements with SBC Communications Inc., as well as roaming agreements with a number of wireless service providers, including Verizon Wireless and Sprint PCS.

“Our successful large-scale deployments, millions of customer connections and the expansion of our roaming agreements greatly increase the number of customers driven to the venues at which we provide service,” said Dave Vucina, chief executive officer of Wayport.

T-Mobile USA Inc., which claims to operate the nation’s largest carrier-owned Wi-Fi network, noted late last year that its HotSpot service was available in more than 5,000 locations across the country.
