UTStarcom provides softswitch for Qualcomm airline test

ALAMEDA, Calif.-UTStarcom Inc. said it provided its wireless softswitch solution for Qualcomm Inc.’s proof-of-concept test to allow passengers aboard an American Airlines commercial flight to place and receive voice calls and text messages.

The solution, known as MovingMedia 2000, works in Qualcomm’s third-generation picocell network and connects to the worldwide terrestrial phone network through an air-to-ground Globalstar satellite link.

Both companies had announced in March an agreement to license UTStarcom to develop, manufacture and sell subscriber and infrastructure equipment for use in CDMA2000, W-CDMA and TD-SCDMA systems.

UTStarcom also said it won $8.2 million worth of contracts to deploy its equipment for Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.’s National Internet Backbone project in India.

The equipment includes its Total Control 1000 multiservice access platform and related products. This announcement is the second phase, according to UTStarcom. India’s BSNL offers service to fixed-line, cellular mobile, long-distance and data markets.
