Nextel offers new real-time NASCAR service

Nextel Communications Inc. unveiled its Java-based PitCommand service offering as part of its NASCAR.com To Go package that allows users to view live information that crew chiefs receive at their command stations during NASCAR races, including speed, engine revolutions per minute, throttle/brake indicators and lap counts, from select Nextel wireless handsets.

The service, which is provided in conjunction with Digital Orchid Inc. and Sportvision Inc., uses in-car telemetry data that is provided six times per second via Sportvision’s proprietary global positioning system technology to track the position of the entire field of NASCAR Nextel Cup Series drivers in real time. The information is then graphically displayed on a Nextel handset with icons representing each car that is synchronized with their relative speed and position. Customers can customize the interface by selecting a virtual speedometer, odometer, gas and brake pedals for any car they choose, plus driver profiles and current standings.

The service is available as part of a bundled data package for $16 per month or for $10 per month when a customers also subscribes to a Total Connect data plan and Nextel Online Web service.
