Siemens, Alcatel announce GSM contracts

MUNICH, Germany and PARIS-Both Siemens AG and Alcatel Corp. announced GSM contracts Wednesday.

Siemens said it will extend GSM networks in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine for Russian-based wireless carrier Mobile TeleSystems under a $200 million contract.

Under the agreement, Siemens will expand and upgrade the switching subsystems in various regional MTS networks in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The German supplier will extend the radio networks with base stations and add new services to the intelligent network platforms. Siemens said the expansion will allow MTS to meet its growing requirements for voice and data services until the end of 2004.

In China, Alcatel will expand and upgrade Shannxi Mobile’s GSM network to a GPRS network through a $10 million contract. Alcatel will provide base stations, subsystems and related software in Yulin, Shangluo, Yanan, Xianyang, Baoji and Weinan.
