GPRS taking off faster than CDMA in China

BEIJING-Following the launch of its General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) services on 17 May, China Mobile Communications has signed 1.3 million users, but a spokesman for China Mobile (Hong Kong) said the use of wireless data services is not significant yet.

Nevertheless, China Mobile has signed up more customers for its GPRS service in two months than China Unicom for its CDMA service in six months.

China Unicom signed up its 1 millionth CDMA user last month. The company plans to upgrade its CDMA network to 1x by the end of the year. Bidding for the upgrade project will open soon.
