A new lease on life for paging in China

BEIJING—China Unicom plans to significantly upgrade its paging service with new information and data services, such as e-mail.

The number of paging subscribers in China is constantly dropping as more people switch to mobile phones. The company’s paging subscribers fell by 6.2 million in the first four months of the year to 26.7 million. The Ministry of Information Industry (MII) estimates China had 29.19 million paging subscribers at the end of April.

The South China Morning Post reports China Unicom saw revenue from its paging business drop 51 percent to 4.76 billion yuan (US$575 million) last year.
