Martin suggests fining carriers for missing E911 deployment targets

WASHINGTON—The Federal Communications Commission should consider imposing fines on wireless carriers that do not meet enhanced 911 implementation deadlines, said FCC Commissioner Kevin J. Martin on Wednesday.

“To the extent that carriers are talking about things beyond their control that they cannot implement our requirements, we need to have interim milestones that can be achieved and that we can have real measurements for. I think we should more seriously consider imposing automatic penalties for the failure to meet those milestones. I think it is critically important that we role this technology out,” said Martin.

Martin used a regularly scheduled press event to highlight the issue but declined to name a dollar figure for such fines. He was apparently putting wireless carriers on notice that if they are not going to meet specific carrier interim targets they could face fines.
