AT&T Wireless discusses network upgrade spending

CHICAGO—AT&T Wireless said it expects to spend an additional $1 billion upgrading its current network to W-CDMA on top of the $2.5 billion the carrier planned to spend on moving to GSM/GPRS/EDGE.

Speaking to investors at a Lehman Brothers conference, AT&T Wireless said it expects to spend several hundred million dollars for the EDGE enhancements to its GPRS network, with full-fledged third-generation services requiring an additional $1 billion.
