T-Mobile adds 1.7 million subscribers

FRANKFURT, Germany—Deutsche Telekom’s wireless unit T-Mobile added 1.7 million net subscribers during the third quarter, bringing the carrier’s worldwide wireless customer base to 45.6 million subscribers.

VoiceStream Wireless, T-Mobile’s U.S. division, added 370,000 net subscribers, well below T-Mobile’s previous estimates of 650,000 customer additions. VoiceStream served 6.3 million customers at the end of the quarter.

While VoiceStream’s customer additions beat only Cingular Wireless among the nationwide operators, relative to its existing customer base, only Sprint PCS grew faster during the quarter. T-Mobile said 99 percent of VoiceStream’s customer additions were contract additions, with average revenue per user for the quarter of US$50.

T-Mobile’s German subsidiary D1 added 500,000 net subscribers during the quarter, or roughly 74 percent of net additions in Germany for the quarter ending with 22.6 million customers. D1 rival, Vodafone Group-controlled D2, added 148,000 net subscribers during the quarter.

One 2 One, T-Mobile’s British subsidiary, also posted strong gains, adding 500,000 net subscribers, approximately 37 percent of total net adds in the United Kingdom. One 2 One ended the quarter with 9.9 million customers.
