Wireless drives semiconductor sales to record high

SAN JOSE, Calif.-Worldwide sales of semiconductors reached a record high of $15.2 billion in April, increasing 35.6 percent from the $11.2 billion reported for the same time last year, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.

“Coupled with strong PC sales, industry growth is being driven by an explosion of worldwide demand for cellular phones and wireless communications infrastructure. While PCs and consumer electronics have strong seasonal demand trends, cellular phones are in demand year round,” said George Scalise, president of SIA.

Sales of flash memory and digital signal processing chips have grown exponentially, said SIA, with flash memory sales increasing 193 percent in the first four months of this year.
