AMSC changes name to Motient

RESTON, Va.-American Mobile Satellite Corp. announced it has changed its name to Motient Corp., with the new Nasdaq symbol MTNT.

“Motient is information in motion, solutions in motion and instant messaging for business-to-business and business-to-consumers,” said Walt Purnell Jr., president and chief executive officer of the company.

Under the new name, Motient announced TSR Wireless Inc. has agreed to resell its eLink wireless e-mail service, joining Metrocall Inc. and SkyTel as another paging company offering the packet-data paging service. In addition, Motient will resell the BlackBerry solution from Research In Motion Ltd., using airtime from its network.

As its last action under the AMSC name, the company released first-quarter 2000 financial results, posting a net loss of $4.5 million, or 9 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $43.1 million, or $1.34 per share, reported for the first quarter last year. Revenues totaled $22.2 million, compared with $20.2 million for the same period the previous year.

The company said subscribers increased by 10,300 to 151,000, a 41-percent improvement.
