The CDMA Development Group formed an interest group within the CDG that will focus on Latin America. The CDG said the interest group builds on the success of similar organizations within the CDG. Other interest groups focus on the Asia Pacific region and wireless local loop networks.

L.M. Ericsson won a contract to expand a Digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service/AMPS network in Argentina for Telecom Personal. Ericsson values the arrangement at $77 million. Network capacity is expected to increase by 50 percent to 750,000 subscribers by the end of this year, said Ericsson. The original network supplied by Ericsson supports about 490,000 subscribers. Telecom Personal and Ericsson also signed a memorandum of understanding that covers pilot trials of Cellular Digital Packet Data for services such as wireless e-mail, said the companies.

Conectel Inc. acquired the paging operations of Radiofon de Venezuela, said Daniels & Associates, which represented the Radiofon in the transaction. Radiofon provides paging services throughout Venezuela.

Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group said it was awarded a contract by the Beijing Telecommunications Administration valued at $28 million to expand the operator’s network. The contract calls for Motorola to expand BTA’s 900 MHz Global System for Mobile communications network as well as install a commercial 1800 MHz GSM dual-band network in Beijing. Network capacity will be expanded by 230,000 subscribers when completed, which is expected before next summer.

Vostok Mobile and other Russian partners are launching digital Advanced Mobile Phone Service networks in six regions of Russia, said L.M. Ericsson, which will supply the Interim Standard-136 network infrastructure. The networks are scheduled to be operating by early next year in Bashkortostan, Bryansk, Novgorod, Kostroma, Yaroslavi and Ivanovo.

KG Telecom, a Global System for Mobile communications operator in Taiwan, selected Lightbridge Inc.’s FraudBuster technology to help prevent fraud. KG Telecom assembled a fraud management team to monitor call activity on its network through the FraudBuster system, said Lightbridge.
