CTIA FOCUSES ON Y2K SOLUTIONS

WASHINGTON-The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association is coordinating expanded efforts to test the industry for the year-2000 computer bug beginning early next year.

The trade association during the past year has worked with individual wireless companies in dealing with the problem, and now will expand those efforts to test the connections between all parties in telephony.

The first series of tests will examine connections among different wireless companies, followed by a series involving wireless-to-interexchange carriers, and the third set of tests will examine wireless-to-wireline connections.

“While there will be substantial investments in money and manpower, there do not seem to be major problems that cannot be overcome internally,” said George Shaginaw, senior vice president for technology and operations at CTIA, of the organization’s work with individual wireless services providers.
