ARRAYCOMM TO SUPPLY WLL PRODUCT TO PHILIPPINES

SINGAPORE-ArrayComm Inc. announced it was awarded a contract to supply several wireless local loop systems to Philippine telecommunications operator, Smart Communications. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

ArrayComm also announced from the CommunicAsia ’98 show in Singapore it has added several features to its IntelliWave WLL system, and plans to work with the Institut Teknologi MARA of Malaysia to speed development of telecom products and services in the Malaysian market.

Smart Communications and NTT DoCoMo conducted extensive field tests on the IntelliWave WLL system alongside systems supplied by other Personal Handyphone Services and DECT equipment vendors.

Shipments of the WLL equipment for service of up to 50,000 lines are scheduled to begin this month, with commercial service slated to launch in August, said ArrayComm. The initial contract is part of Smart’s ongoing effort to expand its telecommunications network in the highly competitive Philippine market.

Smart took position as the cellular front runner in the Philippine market in February when former leader, Pilipino Telephone Corp. (Piltel), purged its subscriber list of fraudulent accounts, the company said.

ArrayComm’s cooperative agreement with the Malaysian technology institute ITM, in conjunction with Nichimen Corp. of Japan, was established to explore technology development, training and consulting in the wireless industry.
