BELLSOUTH STARTS `SMART’ ROAMING

ATLANTA-BellSouth Mobility DCS has launched international roaming with nine European Global System for Mobile communications operators enabling BellSouth’s customers to use their smart cards to roam in Belgium, England, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

BellSouth customers will be able to roam using their subscriber identity module card in a phone that operates at 900 MHz, which can be rented in advance of traveling to Europe. Dual-band phones that operate on both U.S. and European frequencies are expected to be available later this year.

BellSouth plans to expand overseas roaming throughout 1998 to include Asia, Australia, the Middle East and more countries in Europe, the company said.
