KG TELECOM KICKS OFF PCS IN TAIWAN

MONTREAL-Bell Canada International Inc. announced that its Taiwanese consortium, KG Telecom, launched personal communications services in the northern region of Taiwan.

KG Telecom is the first company to meet the commissioning standards set by DGT, the country’s regulatory body, and launch competitive PCS services in Taiwan, said Bell Canada.

KG Telecom last January received its PCS license for the northern region of Taiwan, which includes the county’s capital, Taipei. The region houses 45 percent of Taiwan’s entire population of 9.7 million.

Bell Canada holds a 10-percent stake in the KG Telecom consortium. Other members include the Koo Group, a Taiwanese conglomerate (40 percent), nine other Taiwanese companies (43 percent) and employees and individual investors (7 percent).
