MOTOROLA INKS DEAL WITH VIRGINIA PCS

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Pan American Wireless Infrastructure Division signed a contract to supply Code Division Multiple Access equipment to Virginia PCS Alliance L.C. The companies value the contract at $50 million.

CFW Communications Co., managing partner for the alliance, will offer personal communications services to an estimated 1.5 million people in central and western Virginia.

Motorola agreed to supply its SC family of base stations to the company, including the SC 601, a self-contained CDMA microcellular base station. Also included in the contract are Motorola’s SC 604 and SC 4850 base stations and the high-capacity Electronic Mobile Exchange 2500 mobile switch.

The agreement also calls for Motorola to replace current analog equipment with narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone Service equipment, which will be deployed in markets controlled by CFW’s majority owned company, Virginia RSA6 Cellular Partnership.
