NORTEL TO UPGRADE UZBEKISTAN SYSTEM

DALLAS-Cellular service provider Uzdunrobita will double the size of its Advanced Mobile Phone Service/Time Division Multiple Access wireless network in the former Soviet Republic of Uzbekistan and add a variety of advanced digital subscriber services under terms of an $8.4 million contract with Northern Telecom Ltd.

Subscriber capacity is expected to reach 20,000 customers, and service coverage will be extended throughout the 10 largest metropolitan areas of Uzbekistan, said Nortel. Subscribers will be able to roam throughout the country as well as some parts of Russia and Central Asia.

Nortel said it also will upgrade the Uzdunrobita network to include advanced digital services such as TDMA IS-136, voice and fax mail along with CCITT/ISUP.
