Odyssey signs ChinaSat as

service provider

Odyssey Telecommunications International Inc. signed on its first service provider, China Telecommunications Broadcast Satellite Corp. The Odyssey mobile satellite system, which is scheduled to begin service in 2001, will allow subscribers to use a pocket-sized mobile phone or a fixed wireless phone to call any phone from anywhere on earth, the company said.

The agreement gives ChinaSat exclusive rights to distribute Odyssey satellite-based cellular phone, fax and data services in the People’s Republic of China. ChinaSat also will operate one of seven regional Odyssey earth stations in the company’s global wide area network.

Odyssey said its satellite system is suited to provide affordable digital voice and data services to the rural and remote populations of China. ChinaSat is a wholly owned subsidiary of China’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.
