SOUTH AFRICA POLICE INSTALL SMARTZONE

CAPE TOWN, South Africa-The South African Police Services in Cape Town, South Africa, has decided to install Motorola Inc.’s SmartZone system following the recent completion of a successful trial of the system.

Motorola’s Radio Network Solutions Group developed the SmartZone system to help police forces fight crime.

The South African network will require 17 sites to provide suitable coverage, many of which will be accessible only by 4×4 vehicle or helicopter, said Schaumburg, Ill.-based Motorola.

As a result, the company added a fault-finding feature to the system, which notifies the central police control room in Cape Town of a problem with the network, and allows the user to locate and sometimes rectify the situation remotely.

Members of the police force were trained by Motorola to operate and maintain the system.
