WINSTAR PLANS BUY OF LOCATE’S ASSETS

NEW YORK-WinStar Communications Inc. said it has signed a definitive agreement to purchase certain assets and on-going business operations of the microwave division of Local Area Telecommunications Inc. (Locate), a New York-based local telecommunications company.

Locate, a wholly owned subsidiary of MobileMedia Corp., provides microwave communications services, with operations in several major markets, including New York, Chicago, Washington and Orange County, Calif., WinStar said.

Among Locate’s key assets are two 38 GHz licenses in the New York area, covering 22 million pops. WinStar said the licenses will expand its presence by one channel in northern New Jersey and Long Island, and by two channels in New York City, where WinStar’s 38 GHz license holdings will increase from four channels to six channels. In addition, Locate, with its customers, has roof rights on about two hundred buildings, including key sites in New York, WinStar said.

The acquisition is subject to approval by the Federal Communications Commission and several state regulatory authorities. Until it is approved, WinStar will have a consulting agreement whereby it will assist Locate in managing the company.

WinStar said Locate’s employees will remain with the company bringing it additional expertise in microwave and millimeterwave radio communications.
