N.Y. CELLULAR JOINT VENTURE ACQUIRES INTEREST IN RSA

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-Upstate Cellular Network has acquired a 41 percent general partnership interest in New York State’s Rural Service Area 4. Upstate is a joint venture between Frontier Corp. and Nynex Corp.

Upstate now holds 54 percent interest in RSA 4, after Frontier contributed the 13 percent interest it held. The 41 percent was acquired from Contel Cellular Inc., Deposit Telephone Co. and AFTCOM Inc.

Upstate’s market includes the New York cities of Auburn, Ithaca, Cortland and Seneca Falls. The acquisition will result in an immediate improvement in cellular coverage on Interstate 90-the New York State Thruway-between Syracuse and Rochester, said Jim Whelehan, president of Frontier’s wireless operations.
