Foursquare checks off its 10 millionth user milestone

10 million people and counting are now checking in to places and showing off their location to friends on Foursquare, with the social firm announcing its new user mile stone today during Syracuse University’s iSchool Convocation speech.

CEO Dennis Crowley – who graduated from the university in ’98 – also took to Twitter to tell followers Foursquare had just checked off its 10 millionth user, not a bad achievement considering it only reached its eight millionth user back in March.

Indeed, the entire company was only launched in March 2009, making its growth to 10 million users in just over two years all the more boast-worthy. Direct competitor Gowalla, for example, still only has 1 million members, and Facebook places has failed to attract much attention.

Foursquare, however, continues to thrive thanks to some $21.4 million in funding which allows the firm plenty of leeway to hire new talent and add new features.

On Friday, market research firm ComScore Inc., said 16.7 million U.S. mobile subscribers (7.1% of the U.S. population) used location-based “check-in” services in March, with 12.7 million checking in from a smartphone, representing some 17.6% of the entire smartphone population.

We doubt it will be very long before we see the firm blowing past its 20 million milestone.
