China may introduce commercial 4G mobile services next year after trials

China, the world’s largest mobile- phone market, may begin commercializing its TD-LTE technology standard for so-called fourth-generation mobile services next year.

Trials for the standard have begun and should last for 18 months, Zhang Feng, director of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology’s telecommunications development department, said at a briefing in Beijing today. The tests will include both domestic and overseas companies, Zhang said.

The introduction of commercial TD-LTE services in China is set to spur sales of equipment produced by companies such as Ericsson AB, Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp. as the nation’s carriers upgrade networks to support the technology. China was home to 859 million mobile phone users at the end of last year, more than double the total population of the U.S., according to the industry ministry.
