SDN and virtualization in telecom data centers

On March 27, Manx Telecom announced the opening of the company’s third data center located in Greenhill. The Tier III certified structure, built in three phases, will have the capacity to reliably and securely support the organization’s communications, hosting and managed services for gaming, big data and cloud customers.

“The completion of phase one is a significant step for Manx Telecom as it means we not have the only twin Tier III data center set-up with direct connectivity on the Island, providing a uniquely resilient data hosting proposition,” said Stuart Paul, Manx Telecom data centers director.

Manx is just one of a number of telcos to recently expand their data center service footprint. As these groups further develop their data center infrastructure, it is important to realize the benefits that software-defined networking and virtualization can bring to such telecom structures.

For instance, Networking Computing noted that SDN systems have the capacity to boost service provisioning speed and agility, a vital improvement for telcos as they seek to improve service delivery and enhance customer service. Additionally, SDN can also provide more detailed security measures and better overall management of network resources.

Virtualization also has considerable potential to enable telecom data centers, including allowing operators to reduce operating costs by lowering the amount of hardware. Furthermore, Tech Republic noted that virtualized systems can also streamline content backups and disaster recovery processes, ensuring that services are always available for customers. Virtualization within the data center also has the capacity to foster cloud infrastructures, making the migration of content to cloud and virtual environments much easier.

As telcos look to further develop their computing infrastructures within data center facilities, it is vital to consider and implement SDN and virtualization technologies to improve services and enhance the customer experience.
