University of Texas files patent lawsuit against cell-phone makers

ARLINGTON, Texas-The University of Texas said it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against 14 electronic manufacturers.

The university claims the companies infringed on a patented method that allows text messaging through a standard telephone keypad.

The lawsuit, which charges players such as Kyocera, the Sanyo North America, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, and NEC USA among others, credits professor George Kondraske of the university with issuing the patent.
